Pilonoidal Sinus (PNS) is a condition that occurs mainly in men, in young adults and in those who does a sitting job wherein a small hole or tunnel develops on the skin that gets filled with fluid or pus and forms an abscess or a cyst. Fistula-in-ano is a chronic condition where a tunnel forms connecting the epithelialized surface of the anal canal and the perianal skin. It mainly occurs in people with an anal abscesses history and forms when the abscesses or cyst has not healed completely. It can be very painful and irritating. The therapy roots from Ayurveda by Charak, Sushruta and Vagbhata and its efficacy was established again by BHU’s Shalya Tantra Department. The treatment is absolutely effective, very safe and affordable. The technique is practised widely in India as well as other countries. The technique basically uses a specially prepared thread to treat the diseases.
1:- This treatment is mostly performed under local anaesthesia and normally takes around 20-50 minutes to perform whereas modern surgery normally uses general anaesthesia and takes around 1-2 hours to complete.
2:- Hospital stay does not extend beyond 5-6 hours and the patient can go back to their normal lives within 3-5 days. In case of modern surgery, the patient needs around 1-2 weeks to fully recover.
3:- Kshar sutra treatment is more cost effective than modern surgery.
4:- Possibility of it coming back after Kshar sutra ligation procedure is quite unlikely.
5:- The biggest benefit of Kshar Sutra treatment over modern surgery is that the muscles which support the anus and works towards regulating the bowel movements are not affected, which ensures that the patient doesn’t have to suffer from anal incontinence.
After the Kshar sutra procedure, it is very important to follow a fibre rich diet and avoid any kind of food that would cause constipation. Patients are also advised to keep the anal region clean and do proper dressing.
